Fun Run Friday, November 1st!

Just a reminder that Summit is hosting a Fun Run for all students on Friday, November 1st.  Kindergartners will be running from 2:00-2:25pm.

We are looking for a few willing volunteers to help cheer on students as they run laps around the playground, and to use a marker to record laps as tally marks on arm badge stickers students will be wearing.

Please consider volunteering for this fun event by clicking on the link below.  Thank you for your support!

Tally Marks!

Today we worked on building tally marks.  First we used the sticks to create anything we wanted and then we turned them into tally marks.  What a fun way to keep track of a game or how many books they read or how many snap words they read as they learn to create tally marks and recognize how tally marks are formed and how useful they can be.

Self-Awareness and Problem-Solving Skills

Kindergartners are learning more than just letters and numbers, they are also learning how to learn.  This begins with self-awareness, which means understanding your own feelings, strengths, weaknesses, and having the perseverance to keep learning even when it is hard.  You will find a copy of the same Self-Awareness chart in your child's Friday Folder that we use everyday in class as we choose which goal we are working on with every subject area.
Ask your child what parts of the self-awareness chart they are really good at and which parts they are learning to grow!

We also practiced a new job this week called the Problem Solver Job.  This is an important job that helps kindergartners learn how to solve their own small problems so they can get back to learning and having fun more quickly and independently.  We have some wonderful actors in this class!
Ask your child to teach you how the problem solver job works!

Today we had a great four winds session!  We went outside and did some leaf rubbings and bark rubbing.  Then we had a great puppet show.

Outdoor Classroom/Academic Choice

It couldn't have been a more beautiful day for our outdoor classroom.  We went to visit our class tree and heard a great story about our tree.  Ask your kindergartener to tell you the story we heard about the chain on the tree to help the tree when it was young.

We then collected materials and built numbers with our natural material.

After all the fun, we even had time for academic choice, which we focused on recording our work and adding labels.
